Robin’s Nest came to exist and continues to this day because most animal shelters and humane societies are not well equipped to provide the extra care and low-stress environment needed for little kittens, and pregnant or nursing cats to thrive and become adoptable pets. Central Indiana has many fine rescue groups and animal shelters, but none of them cater specifically to this particularly vulnerable group of cats.
We began as a single person asked to care for kittens found by a neighbor. Over time, additional partners and helpers joined the group, and the number of orphan kittens and cats with kittens grew. Helpful vets provided advice and expertise with challenging cases, but a lot of knowledge was gained by hard experience – including both remarkable success stories of cats saved and heartbreaking losses.
Throughout it all, we stayed true to the original vision that a foster-based rescue that provided a high level of training and support to its fosters gave these kittens and mama cats the best chance of survival and an eventual forever home.
We eventually incorporated and became a 501(c)(3) charitable organization to obtain access to additional partner organizations and support to give the cats we take in an even better chance at a happy life. The need is great, and each year we care for more animals, complete more adoptions, find new ways to get better at what we do and discover over and over again that our long-time motto is indeed true – “Blessed is the home that shelters a stray.”
